New: For information on the upcoming SERTOMA
GOLF TOURNAMENT:
The Winston-Salem
Sertoma Club is an
organization of men and women united in the ideal of service to the community
and exists for the high and noble purpose of benefitting mankind at large. The
name of our club identifies this purpose. Sertoma stands for SERvice TO MAnkind. Our club is composed
of people from this area who are interested in serving others through a civic
club. We meet weekly for lunch, fellowship, club business and an interesting
program to help keep us current with the events in our community. This meeting
is the heart of our club, where friendships are made and guest speakers inform
and entertain members.
A Sertoma club is an organization with
membership open to all those who share a common aspiration of interest, usually
in the civic and youth fields, and who become members by their own decision.
There is no doubt that a Sertoma club fulfills certain basic human needs such
as self-expression, an outlet for creative drives, and self-assertion through
collective action. It also offers a measure of recognition and security in
addition to personal development in leadership training.
Sertoma gives you a unique opportunity to
grow as an individual. You will develop interpersonal skills from public
speaking to working with a group of diverse individuals, from raising money for
a good cause to holding elective office. You will gain a better understanding
of your community and its problems, and you will work with business and
political leaders to help solve them. And you and your family will develop new
and lasting relationships as you get to know your fellow Sertomans throughout
the United States, Canada and Mexico. But to be honest, Sertoma will gain as
much or more by having YOU as a member! The membership requirements may be
found by clicking here on membership.
The Winston-Salem Sertoma Club has sponsored
many local community services in our area depending on need and the
availability of funds. We regularly contribute to the Salvation Army and
participate in their yearly bell-ringing drive. Our primary sponsorship
emphasis though is on speech and hearing impairments and is represented by the
Sertoma Interclub Council, which conducts a summer speech therapy program for
children and hearing screenings for adults and children. We also operate a
summer camp for speech and hearing-impaired children at Camp Sertoma, an
American Camping Association accredited 800-acre camp located near Hanging Rock
State Park. For more information, contact the Camp Sertoma Club.
Our club plans its own service work to fit the needs of the community, a system which encourages the development of unique and imaginative service programs and gives members an opportunity to serve in an either a group or an individual way. Sertoma clubs provide people with an ideal outlet for their energy, their enthusiasm and their dedication to serve their communities. One way we do this is through fundraisers like bar-b-ques and golf tournaments. One of the more exciting fundraisers for the year is the upcoming 4th Annual golf tournament to be held at Oak Valley Golf Club on May 7, 2010. For more information on how this tournament benefits our community, click here. If you would like to participate in this tournament to raise money for the Summer Deaf Camp and Summer Speech Program, please click here.
Our Club meets weekly (except around holidays) for lunch on Mondays at 12:00 PM at the Golden Corral Restaurant, Hanes Mall Shopping Center. The meeting agenda includes fellowship, lunch, an opportunity to meet new people and develop relationships with others in the same or different professions, club business and a program. The programs that have been presented in the past have been outstanding. We have had the honor of welcoming such dignitaries as Mayor Allen Joines, Sheriff William Schatzman, and State Representative Dale Folwell, as well as directors and representatives of community agencies such as Samaritan Ministries, Goodwill, Crisis Control, The Salvation Army and the Winston-Salem Center for the Hearing Impaired. Upcoming program dates can be found here.
The meetings are important to the vitality of the club and we strive to make them interesting and informative, but the meetings are also scheduled to be punctual and convenient so as not to interfere with busy personal agendas. We hope that you will join us in the future as our guest for one of our meetings, and consider joining us.
